After 40 years of organizational consulting, plus a master's degree in conflict resolution, I moved into coaching and training to close two gaps.
First, organizations have reduced professional development budgets and expect employees to learn on their own. Microlearning, peer mentorship, self-guided digital learning - they might work for some things but they won't help you handle collaboration and conflict better.
Second, what's out there doesn't go deep enough.
Most of the training and advice I see delivers level 1 - here's how you handle a difficult conversation, here's what you say to reconcile differences. It tells you why, too - but the focus is on a script. It's steps - like Dominos walking you through an online pizza order.
But I don't see the level where you ask yourself - is a conflict about personality or a role? If it's one or the other, would I do something different? Should differences always be reconciled? Should we explore them to see what we learn? Or maybe some shouldn't be reconciled for ethical reasons?
And don't get me started on how many videos tell you how to handle conflict which isn't even conflict.
But there's one more level - I don't see anyone ask you whether how you feel in a moment has anything to do with how you handle it - or handle yourself in it. It's as if your gut feeling or intution isn't relevant. Just say this and forget the butterflies, tight throat, sweaty palms. Your spidey sense doesn't mean anything.
That was in 2023 and it started me on a path I'm still on. My writing, coaching, and teaching are here for you to make your path. I look forward to working with you.
